By keeping an eye on your message segments, you can spot exactly which templates are costing too much and where your team might need a little coaching on keeping things brief. It’s the difference between wondering why your credits disappeared and actually knowing how to make them last twice as long.
Perks of Message Segment Reporting
The first thing to do is look for the "credit hogs." You’ll often find that a few specific habits are driving up your costs. Look for:
The "Special Character" Trap: Using certain symbols or non-standard characters (like curly quotes from Word) can force a message into a different encoding, which cuts your character limit per segment in half.
Redundant Info: Are you texting information that’s already in an email they just got? Cutting that out saves segments immediately.
Power Users: Every team has that one person who writes novels over SMS. Use the data to find them and show them how to be more concise.
Pro Tip: To access real-time message composition insights, your organization must be running at least Mogli Version 5.113.2. We recommend upgrading to the latest Mogli version for all performance improvements.
Data is a lot more useful when you look at it over time. Try grouping your reports by month or quarter. If you see a massive spike every July, you can plan your budget around that instead of being surprised by a "Low Balance" alert right when you're in the middle of a big push.
Use your past usage to guess what’s coming. If your summer volume is usually triple what you send in the winter, you’ll know exactly how many segments to buy ahead of time so you aren't scrambling at the last minute.
Tracking Message Segments with reports
Requirements
Make sure you’re on Version 5.86 or higher.
This works for almost all messages, though Twilio Intelligent Route records don't track segments just yet (that's coming later).
Instructions
Go to the Reports tab in Salesforce.
Start a new report using Mogli Messages (some older versions might still call this "SMS").
Filter for Outbound
You only pay for what you send, so filter your report to only show outbound messages. You can also filter by date or gateway here.
Set your Outline
Choose the fields you want to see. We recommend grouping by Created Date so you can see your usage trends week-by-week or month-by-month.

Columns of note
Total Records: This is simply how many messages you sent.
Total Message Segments: This is the big one—it's the actual "units" you were billed for.
