Hosted SMS

Prev Next

At Mogli, we want to make sure that enabling text messaging on your existing business phone numbers is as smooth as possible. To do that, we use a process called Hosted SMS.

Hosting your SMS with Mogli gives you access to professional-grade messaging features — like automation, bulk messaging, and Salesforce integration — all while keeping the business number your customers already know.

Most people assume that voice and text are bundled together as one service, but in the business world, they can actually be handled by separate companies.

Hosted SMS lets you keep your current voice provider (like RingCentral, Vonage, etc.) for phone calls, while Mogli's messaging partners take over the SMS portion of that same number. That means you get all the power of Mogli's messaging features without having to change your phone system or get a new number.

Getting Started

Before initiating Hosted SMS, have the following ready:

  • Your current voice provider's name and account information

    • Most major business VoIP and landline providers support this seamlessly. However, a select few proprietary systems restrict SMS splitting. Our team can run a quick check on your numbers during our initial call to confirm compatibility.

    • If your company is planning to switch voice providers (e.g., moving from Vonage to RingCentral) in the near future, let the Mogli team know before getting started. It is always best to finalize your voice porting before we initiate Hosted SMS.

  • The phone number(s) you'd like to enable for SMS

    • You don't have to use an existing number. Mogli can easily provision brand new, text-enabled local or toll-free numbers for your team.

  • Authorization to sign the Letter of Authorization (LOA)

  • A preferred start date or a low-traffic window for the transition

The Process

When we begin hosting the SMS for your number, a few things happen behind the scenes:

Authorization

🤝

Carrier Coordination

🛜

Propagation Period

Mogli will provide you with a Letter of Authorization (LOA) template. This is your formal approval telling your voice provider that it's okay for Mogli's partners to handle your text traffic. You'll simply complete and sign the template, then return it to the Mogli team to kick off the process.

We submit your LOA to the U.S. mobile carrier industry. Your voice provider and our messaging partner work together behind the scenes to release text routing to Mogli, while keeping your voice routing exactly where it is.

Once carrier coordination is complete, U.S. carrier networks update their internal routing tables to recognize that calls still go to your voice provider, while texts now go to Mogli.

During the Transition

This transition is handled manually by carriers to prevent number hijacking. That human-verified process is what makes it secure — and also why it takes a little time.

  • Total Onboarding Timeline Up to 10 business days (includes gateway configuration, hosting request processing, and throughput testing)

  • SMS Quiet Period 3–5 business days of intermittent SMS toward the end of the window, as domestic carrier routing tables sync. Some inbound messages may be delayed or undeliverable depending on the sender's carrier. Messages are generally not permanently lost, but delivery cannot be guaranteed during this window. If you have concerns about a specific message, contact the Mogli team for guidance.

  • Voice Service Completely unaffected. Your voice provider remains your vendor for all call-related services.

If your business relies on daily text communication, we recommend coordinating the hosting transition during a slower stretch of your week. It's also a good idea to notify your current voice provider that a hosting request will be submitted so carrier coordination goes smoothly.

Hosted SMS vs. Number Porting

These two terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but they're actually quite different — and it's an important distinction.

Hosted SMS: Splits the services on your existing number. Your voice provider keeps the number and handles calls, while Mogli's partners handle text traffic. You never give up your number, your voice service is never interrupted, and your current phone bill remains virtually unchanged.

Number Porting: A full transfer of your phone number from one carrier to another. The new carrier takes over everything, both voice and SMS. This is a more significant change and typically involves canceling service with your original provider and closing your account for that number.
